On 10th of July 2024 Jagex added a new demon variant to the game. These demons are considered as a “greater demon” and are called Tormented demons. They are the strongest non-boss variant of demons. Killing these creatures are extremely profitable but they are a little tricky with their mechanics. In this guide we are going to explore the most efficient and easy ways to kill these creatures and make bank.
Tormented Demons
To be able to slay these fabled demons, you will first need to complete a quest called “While Guthix Sleeps”. This quest is a long grandmaster quest but the ability to fight tormented demons is well worth doing it. They have two unique drops:
Tormented synapse - 1/500 - 62.4M
Burning claw - 1/5001 - 7.1M
Tormented synapse is a new ingredient that you can use to craft the brand new demonbane weapons which are extremely powerful against demons.
Two burning claws can be combined together to make a burning claws, this item is a lesser and cheaper version of dragon claws but is actually stronger against demons.
Location & How to Get There
These demons reside in the Ancient Guthix Temple. There are two ways to get to them:
Just like you did in the quest, teleport to “tears of Guthix” via a games necklace and run north. Climb the rocks and use your sapphire lantern on a light creature to descend into the abyss. Once there follow the path climb some rocks and enter the temple just like you did during the quest.
Second and the easiest way is to use Guthixian temple teleports which teleports you directly to the entrance of the temple and will allow you to have an additional free inventory spot.
Inside the ancient temple there are many locations to kill these demons at. You will notice a demon icon and a number at the bottom right side of your screen. The number indicates how many tormented demons you can attack at the same time. If you are just starting out, pick a location with the number 1 or 2.

How to Kill Tormented Demons
Tormented demons have few unique mechanics that the player has to know of, in order to kill it. These mechanics are extremely simple once learned.
Accuracy buff: After roughly 15 seconds of engaging in combat with the demon, your accuracy will increase to 100%. This timer and buff resets after each fire bomb attack.
Overhead prayers: Each tormented demon will spawn with an overhead prayer. This prayer will change after the demon receives 150 points of damage and it will change into the damage type that it last was damaged with. Using a thrall of a third attack style might end up as the last damage and you will get a free pass without the need of switching your gear. Also during this timeframe the demon will stop attacking for 3.6 seconds, for the player to switch styles.
Fire bomb & Attack style: Roughly every 36 seconds, the tormented demon will bind you to your place, turn off your run and fire two fire bombs to your location. One of them is going to land right on you and the second one will land a tile near you. Tanking these bombs will easily deal over 40 damage to the player so it is best to avoid them.
To avoid these bombs simply hold down CTRL and spam click away from the bombs. We are holding down CTRL to force our character to run instead of walk.
After dodging bombs get ready to switch your prayers because, after the bombs the demon is going to change its attack style. To predict the style you can look for the following:
If the demon walks towards you it will use melee. If you are near the demon simply walk away to check this.
If it doesn’t walk toward the player it will use either ranged or magic. If the demon's previous attack was magic it will use ranged, if it was ranged it will use magic. If the previous attack was melee you will have to guess.
Alternatively you can force the demon to change styles, if you try safe spotting the demon it will switch to either range or magic. If you try to stand underneath the demon it will switch to melee.
Shield & Heavy Weapons: Tormented demons have a passive shield. This shield reduces damage taken from any weapon by 20% with the exception of abyssal and demonbane weapons. During the fight there will be times when this shield is turned off. During those time frames you can hit these demons for massive amounts of damage with heavy hitting weapons. This has a weird mechanic where your damage will scale with how slow your weapons attack cycle is. So the best weapons to use for this are; heavy ballista(on accurate), Dharok’s greataxe and dragon 2h sword. If you land a hit with these weapons while the shields are down, not only do you get a chance to hit a massive number, it also resets your attack timer to 4 ticks so you can attack again really quickly. You can take advantage of this mechanic in the following scenarios:
After hitting the demon once, you can use a heavy hitting weapon on your next hit since the shield will be down for a hit.
After the demon uses his fireball attack, its shield will be down for a singular hit so you can use a heavy hitting weapon then as well.
Full Kill
Teleport to the caverns and make your way to one of the locations.
Attack the demon using one of the styles that you’ve brought. After your first hit, switch to your heavy hitting weapon to deal massive damage for an attack.
Summon your thrall and switch your combat style after every 150 damage.
Dodge the fireballs using CTRL click and hit the demon with your heavy hitting weapon right after dodging.
Be mindful of the demon's attack style and pray against it accordingly.
Killing Three At The Same Time
This is difficult to do, to kill three demons at the same time you must constantly switch your protection prayers to the right style and it can get confusing but if you are fighting multiple demons at the same time, all of them will use their fireball attack at the same time so you can use your heavy weapon against all of them in that time frame.
Congratulations you have just slayed your first tormented demon and goodluck on your grind!
