MAGESWARY The Associated Press KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia Malaysian riot police fired tear gas and water cannons at more than 10,000 supporters of jailed politician Anwar Ibrahim at the National Mosque on Sunday. Protesters hurled stones at police and yelled, "Dogs of the government!" and "You are pigs!" Both are harsh insults in mostly Muslim Malaysia, where pigs and dogs are considered unclean. Police were seen beating demonstrators with batons. It was not immediately known. if there were injuries.

Police were seen dragging at least a half-dozen protesters into police vans. Clutching handkerchiefs to their faces, members of the crowd fled into the mosque's compound NATION 10 International St. Louis FRONTS: EXTREMES after they were sprayed with the water, laced with an eye-stinging chemical. Police fired without warning on crowd, which had gathered at the mosque to protest Anwar's prison treatment. The demonstrators later marched toward the National Palace.

Demonstrators wanted to deliver a memorandum to Malaysia's king calling for a royal commission of inquiry into Anwar's claim that he was being poisoned in prison, organizers said. Supporters say they have no faith in a police probe already under way. The memo to the king delivered by Anwar's eldest daughter, Nurul Izzah. She handed the petition to palace guards.
